Why a Stroud Preservation Trust? Our History, purpose and how we work
Stroud Preservation Trust was set up in 1982 as a limited company and charity. We are a building preservation trust, a recognised form of charity specialising in historic building regeneration.
We were founded by activists who met during a successful campaign to save Georgian listed buildings on Stroud's High Street. At that time, many of Stroud's historic buildings were threatened with decay and demolition because of economic and social change, together with planning blight. Our projects have shown it is possible to bring old buildings back from the brink of destruction so they can again play a role in the life of our town.
Over the last three decades, Stroud Preservation Trust has restored six very different buildings and investigated many other buildings at risk. Changes in the property market mean that private developers are more likely to invest in some old buildings, leaving less work for building preservation trusts. However, Stroud Preservation Trust's experience and access to funding may continue to unlock solutions for some complex projects.
“ The core purpose of the Trust is to preserve buildings of particular historical, architectural & constructional interest in and around Stroud, for the benefit of the community and the nation. ”
